Eduard Pernkopf: The Nazi book of anatomy still used by surgeons

Eduard Pernkopf: The Nazi book of anatomy still used by surgeons | History and Historians | Scoop.it
Kent College History's insight:

When nerve surgeon Dr Susan Mackinnon needed help to finish an operation, she reached, as she often does, for a mid-20th Century book of anatomy ... The book she had used, the innocuous-sounding Pernkopf Topographic Anatomy of Man, is widely considered to be the best example of anatomical drawings in the world. It is richer in detail and more vivid in colour than any other ... But the book, often referred to as Pernkopf's Atlas, is no longer in print and a second-hand set - there are several volumes - can sell for thousands of pounds online ... That's because the book's findings came from the bodies of hundreds of people killed by the Nazis. It is their bodies - cut up and dissected - that are shown across thousands of pages.'

Reinterpreting the Weimar Republic | History Today

Reinterpreting the Weimar Republic | History Today | History and Historians | Scoop.it
The Universal Pictures film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front had its German premiere at the Mozart Hall in Berlin on December 5th, 1930. Hailed as a masterpiece in Britain and America, 'the most impressive talking picture yet seen', the film had a very different reception in Germany. Barely ten minutes after it had begun, the performance was interrupted when the National Socialist propaganda chief Josef Goebbels walked noisily out of the theatre. This was the signal for Nazi activists in the audience to release white mice, stink bombs and itching powder into the crowded auditorium.
Kent College History's insight:
'The archetypal image of the Weimar Republic is one of political instability, economic crisis and debauched hedonism. Colin Storer [University of Nottingham] challenges the clichéd view of the Republic as a tragic failed state.'
