'Often dubbed the father of English democracy, in 1264 Simon de Montfort led a baronial revolt against King Henry III, established a constitutional monarchy and, in the act he is most famous for, revolutionised the representation of parliament, the future Commons. Not for another 400 years, until the advent of Oliver Cromwell, would England see a revolution led by a figure of comparable stature.'
