Along the socioeconomic spectrum in New York City’s student population, there is a corresponding vocabulary gap for children beginning in kindergarten. Education isn't only what happens in the walls of the classroom. So many times parents assistance is the critial factor in making the formal education 'stick.' This was the most jarring statistic fro this article: children of professionals hear 32 MILLION more words by age four than the poorest kids. That is not inconsequential.

This is an great article that highlights some of the problems inherent with the educational system. You wouldn't want the pilot to be trained a we train teachers because you'd want the pilot to have as much experience as possible before flying solo. So why would we train our teacher in a way that doesn't maximize hands-on experience? Some food for thought and we contemplate educational reform.

Social media technologies has made numerous shifts that some educators have resisted. Donald Clark ends the talk with this poignant ending: "You can ignore it, but resistance is futile."

I composed this list of 101 websites for social studies teachers by scouring the depths of the interwebs for quality resources. I came across all kinds of sites dedicated to U.S. history, world history, culture, geography, maps, economics, etc., but these are the ones I found to be most up-to-date, accurate and professional. Education is a better economic driver than a country’s natural resources.
This NY Times article is compelling fodder for a discussion on economic development. While having natural resources on the surface sounds like the best valuable asset for a nation economy, why does Friedman argue that an abundance of natural resource can hurt the national economy? While an educated workforce is obviously an asset, just how important is it compared to other factors?

For years, the secrets to great teaching have seemed more like alchemy than science, a mix of motivational mumbo jumbo and misty-eyed tales of inspiration and dedication.
We intuitively know this, and the data backs it up--having a good teacher matters. What common traits were identified among superb teachers? 1) They set big goals for their students, 2) continually reworking how they teach, 3) recruit students and parents into the process, 4) focused on student outcomes (not teacher actions), 5) planned meticulously and 6) relentlessly refused to surrender to typical problems (socioeconomic, budgetary, bureaucratic, etc.).

The innovative minds at TED have brought a new educational video website to the head of the class. Today, TED-Ed launched http://ed.ted.com, a site that features TED-Ed’s original K-12 animated videos with accompanying lessons and quizzes.
I'm incredibly excited about this announcement. I've included a few TED-Ed link on my site http://www.scoop.it/t/geography-education and will continue to do so. Khan Academy is not alone as a major free website that is producing great videos for educational purposes. TED-Ed also has lesson materials at can be customized to your particular classroom needs.

We’ve come a long way as a society in terms of gender equality. Men are teachers, women are doctors, and no one flinches. As I like to tell my daughters, they can grow up to be anything they want to be — except fathers.
Societal gender norms impact us in more ways than we often recognize. Why would men without sons be more emotionally invested in outdoor activities? Some of this is personal preference, but on the macro-scale, gender norms impact many of our personal choices.
