Defining Personalization in Education - Learning with no Boundaries

Defining Personalization in Education - Learning with no Boundaries | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

A BC principal shares what personalized learning actually means for students.  He reflects on this graphic:  "I can see how a more personalized system that aims to meet the needs of individual learners may come into conflict with current systems aimed at presenting a predictable, standardized education system that is more representative of a “one-size-fits-all” program."

He concludes his post:

"To me, a more personalized learning environment will be one that:
> is focused on the student;

> is richly designed around critical thinking;

> incorporates creativity and innovation both in its own design, but also in the design of learning outcomes;

> is flexible enough for students at any age to move at their own pace and to explore topics that might not be formally a part of our curriculum;

> offers students choices in how and when they learn;

> creates and encourages collaborative learning teams."

Pasi Sahlberg Video: Finland's Top Goal for Education - "Better Individual Learning Path"

Pasi Sahlberg Video: Finland's Top Goal for Education - "Better Individual Learning Path" | Personalize Learning (#plearnchat) | Scoop.it

David Truss provides an excellent synopsis of Finland's educational system from this video, "Key Drivers of Educational Performance in Finland" presented by Pasi Sahlberg in April 2010.

Do not miss this video of Sahlberg's presentation as he reflects on why Finland has created the highest-ranking system in the world. At the end of this presentation, Sahlberg notes the future goals that Finland has for education; the top one being "Better Individual Learning Path".

In his concluding remarks he articulates the importance of creativity:

"This creativity aspect is very important because in Finland we believe that risk-taking, creativity and innovation are very, very important for a society like ours.  And particularly working in this global and globalized world it is more important than what you actually know and remember, it is more what you are and what you are capable of doing.”"
