Pregnant moms’ response to arsenic linked to sex of fetus

Pregnant moms’ response to arsenic linked to sex of fetus | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

How a pregnant woman metabolizes arsenic may be affected by the sex of her fetus, and a male child may be at increased risk for adverse health outcomes. These and other findings were presented Aug. 8 by Elizabeth Martin, Ph.D., at the annual NIEHS Karen Wetterhahn Memorial Award lecture. Martin is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).

Membranes Remove Arsenic from Water | ChemistryViews

Membranes Remove Arsenic from Water | ChemistryViews | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

The contamination of drinking water with arsenic is a pressing problem in several regions of the world, e.g., Bangladesh, China, and India. This is caused by elevated levels of arsenic compounds in the groundwater. Long-term exposure can lead to adverse health effects, especially skin lesions and cancer. Many of the existing techniques for arsenic removal have problems such as limited effectiveness for arsenic in its +5 oxidation state.

Murano: removing arsenic brings benefits to health and the environment | ECHA Newsletter

Murano: removing arsenic brings benefits to health and the environment | ECHA Newsletter | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it
Arsenic trioxide used to be one of the most important chemicals used in Murano, Italy to create their world-famous artistic glass. However, the substance was included in the Authorisation List in February 2012 with a sunset date on 21 May 2015. The glassmakers had to make a difficult decision – to apply for authorisation or to substitute. They opted for the latter. We spoke to Giorgio Cipolla, Coordinator of surveillance activities at the REACH Regional System, to ask about the impact that the substance’s removal has had on the region.

– Arsenic-Containing Feed Supplements –

Supplements containing arsenic have been banned in the European Union since 1999 and in North America since 2013. In many countries they are still added to poultry feed to prevent parasitic infection and promote weight gain. In the journal Angewandte Chemie, scientists have now demonstrated that the danger to human health may be greater than previously thought because the metabolic breakdown of these compounds in chickens occurs via intermediates that are significantly more toxic than the initial additives.

How Roosevelt’s Tree Army were poisoned

How Roosevelt’s Tree Army were poisoned | Prévention du risque chimique | Scoop.it

In the first of a new column, Raychelle Burks investigates a mass arsenic poisoning during the Great Depression.

Monday, October 4, 1937 began as usual for enrollees at a US Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp with breakfast in the mess hall. Next, these CCC enrollees would work on various projects – steady employment in a decade that saw US unemployment rates reach 25%. The world was struggling with the Great Depression and the CCC was one of President Franklin Roosevelt’s national relief efforts…
