The Daily Mail Song

mp3 here: http://bit.ly/9zPBDi We're aware this video won't mean an awful lot if you've never heard of The Daily Mail (a British Newspaper), but on the plus side, you've never heard of The Daily Mail.

Remind 101

Remind 101 | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
A safe way for teachers to text message students and keep in touch with parents.

I've tried numerous methods including Facebook groups and Twitter hashtags as ways to digitally connect with my students through emerging social media platforms.  Every method seems to have a few privacy or accessibility issues and this is no expection.  However, this I think that the benefits outweigh the negatives and has much greater privacy control than most.  I haven't tried this out yet, but next semester I hope to use this free way to text message all my students (and/or parents) without the privacy issues of sharing cell phone numbers or getting them to sign up for a new social media platform.

Twitter as a source for Professional Development

Here is the link for this week's best of twitter teacher resources.

This is a fabulous list of educational resources on Google Docs (with a strong emphasis on history and social studies).  This also demonstrates how one educator has harnessed the power of twitter as a source of professional development and educational networking.  All of these links were compiled during one week by one teacher; just think about possibilities when digital curation becomes collaborative!

New Study Pegs Pinterest As The Number 3 Social Website

New Study Pegs Pinterest As The Number 3 Social Website | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it
According to a recent study, Pinterest has risen to the 3rd most trafficked social media website.

This announcement is a good time to evaluate this simple question: How can I use Pinterest within the classroom and for pedagogical purposes?  Here's my Geography Education pinterests boards http://pinterest.com/geogeducation/ to show what I currently am trying to do, but there are so many other possibilities.  And for those obsessed with knowing the ranking of social media sites, here they are:

1. Facebook

2. Twitter

3. Pinterest

4. LinkedIn

5. Tagged

6. Google+

Monitter : real time, live twitter search

Monitter : real time, live twitter search | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

Wondering how you are going to keep up with a large twitter conversation?  Try this Twitterwall called Monitter.  Many tweets fit on one page, pictures and names are large so you can identify the contributors.  The multiple columns like Tweetdeck is smooth, making this quite functional to follow several 'backchannel' conversations.   Displayed is http://www.visibletweets.com which prettier, but less functional for a high volume conversation (good for a guided discussion, with one tweet at a time).

How Using Social Media Can Help You with Your Online College Classes

How Using Social Media Can Help You with Your Online College Classes | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

Taking an online college class might sound like an easy “A” that gives lazier students a chance to sleep in and spend class time in their pajamas and robe instead of dressing and showering the way we used to before the Internet.

Israeli/Palestinian Conflict

With a simple class hashtag (e.g.-#geog400ric) you can create a backchannel for student to collaborate outside the classroom walls.   This is an example of how you can use social media within your classroom

  1. Use twitter with a class hashtag.
  2. Bundle materials with Storify.
  3. Use Scoop.it to archive a collaborative textbook.

Twitter Experiment- "The Social Media Classroom"

Dr. Rankin, professor of History at UT Dallas, wanted to know how to reach more students and involve more people in class discussions both in and out of the ...

Cell phones and social media are sometimes viewed as the anti-thesis of paying attention and staying engaged in class.  I'm doing this for the first time this semester, what I am calling "the Social Media Classroom" and so far, it's been fruitful.

Ryan McDonough's curator insight, July 21, 2014 5:35 PM

This video was all about getting students to voice their opinions and communicate in the classroom. Sometimes, raising your hand to ask questions and particpate can be hard for some personalities. Using Twitter for the classroom discussion gets everyone's input. Shy students really benefit from using this platform for classroom discussions. Texting can continue throughout the semester-- even when school isn't in session using social media to drive the conversation.

Map My Followers

Map My Followers | Social Media Classroom | Scoop.it

This is a great site that combines the power of geography and social media.  You can map the wher your twitter followers are (if they make the data publicly available).  Additionally, you can pan, zoom and identify specific followers.  Can you find yourself on this map (followers of @APHumanGeog)?
