What’s Going On Inside the Brain When We Play Music? | #Visual #Arts #Creativity  | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Playing music is the brain’s equivalent of a full body workout,” says educator Anita Collins in a TED-Ed video on how playing music benefits the brain. Playing music requires the visual, auditory, and motor cortices all at once and since fine motor skills require both hemispheres of the brain, the act of playing music may strengthen the bridge between the two sides. In studies comparing playing music to other activities, including other forms of art, playing an instrument is uniquely powerful for the brain.

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age

20 Ideas for Professional Development in the Digital Age | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

Professional development for teachers themselves, as personalities, adult people, universally, independently from schooling is very interesting idea, humanistic , and useful for school eventually

Harnessing the Incredible Learning Potential of the Adolescent Brain | #LEARNing2LEARN #Research

Harnessing the Incredible Learning Potential of the Adolescent Brain | #LEARNing2LEARN #Research | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
“[Adolescence is] a stage of life when we can really thrive, but we need to take advantage of the opportunity,” said Temple University neuroscientist Laurence Steinberg at a Learning and the Brain conference in Boston. Steinberg has spent his career studying how the adolescent brain develops and believes there is a fundamental disconnect between the popular characterizations of adolescents and what’s really going on in their brains.

Because the brain is still developing during adolescence, it has incredible plasticity. It’s akin to the first five years of life, when a child’s brain is growing and developing new pathways all the time in response to experiences. Adult brains are somewhat plastic as well — otherwise they wouldn’t be able to learn new things — but “brain plasticity in adulthood involves minor changes to existing circuits, not the wholesale development of new ones or elimination of others,” Steinberg said.

The adolescent brain is exquisitely sensitive to experience,” Steinberg said. “It is like the recording device is turned up to a different level of sensitivity.” That’s why humans tend to remember even the most mundane events from adolescence much better than even important events that took place later in life. It also means adolescence could be an extremely important window for learning that sticks. Steinberg notes this window is also lengthening as scientists observe the onset of puberty happening earlier and young people taking on adult roles later in life. Between these two factors, one biological and one social, adolescence researchers now generally say the period lasts 15 years between the ages of 10 and 25.

The problem is that many high schools confuse “challenging work” with “amount of work.”
Lon Woodbury's curator insight, February 22, 2017 10:00 AM

It seems like boredom is deadly to the learning process and that's exactly what high school students report is what is happening to them in most schools - The lack of challenge. k-Lon

A Quick-Guide To Teaching Empathy In The Classroom | #Understanding each other | #ModernEDU

A Quick-Guide To Teaching Empathy In The Classroom | #Understanding each other | #ModernEDU | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
By teaching students these skills in an authentic, applicable way, will they see each other differently? It’s worth finding out. With so many curricular and time restraints on teachers, how can we be expected to explicitly teach empathy in a meaningful way?

A Definition Of Empathy

Webster’s dictionary defines empathy as: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either in the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also: the capacity for this.

When Teachers and Technology Let Students Be Masters of Their Own Learning | #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Mastery learning is the idea that students should adequately comprehend a given concept before being expected to understand a more advanced one. This idea has a long tradition in educational theory and research. In 1919, superintendent Carleton W. Washburne in Winnetka, Illinois, showed that students could advance at their own pace if they mastered a concept before moving on to something more complicated.

Years later, building on Washburne’s work, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom coined the term “mastery learning.” In 1984, in Bloom’s seminal study, “The 2 Sigma Problem,” he showed that mastery-based one-on-one tutoring is two standard deviations more effective than conventional instruction. (That means it would take the average for a cohort of students from the 50th percentile to the 98th percentile!). Ever since, educators have sought ways to make mastery learning available to all students.

Teachers Need a Growth Mindset Too | #ModernEDU #ProfessionalDevelopment | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Pushing our students to adopt a growth mindset is an easy call. Adopting one ourselves is harder.

Having a growth mindset doesn’t just mean learning about the theory and leaving it at that. It’s a constant process. Sometimes it’s difficult, often it’s a little painful, but it’s always worth the effort.

Six Tips for Instilling a Growth Mindset in Yourself

Focus on the hard stuff

Try innovative solutions, and if they don’t work, try some more.

Seek feedback wherever you can.

Reflect at the end of every day, especially the bad ones.

Notice the areas where you have a fixed mindset.

There’s a catch to learning a lot about growth mindset. Once we learn just how much of our lack of growth is a product of our attitude, it’s not so easy to write things off as impossible anymore.

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

Why is hands-on learning effective? We can look to neuroscience for insight. Students who participate in science experiments, instead of just observing them, have a deeper conceptual understanding of science. Through brain imaging, researchers found that physical experience activates the sensorimotor region of students' brains, which helps reinforce what they're learning (Kontra et al., 2015).

If students use their hands as well as their minds, they're essentially learning twice.

Critical Thinking: Educating Competent Citizens | #DigitalCitiZENship #eSkills | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

We are becoming increasingly aware of the need to analyze the enormous amount of information we receive every day.  This information helps us in our cognitive development and participates in the construction of our patterns of perception of reality. In the case of children and young people, these patterns are in continual development.

Critical thought is a cognitive process that proposes the systematic analysis of information, opinion and statements that we accept in our daily life as valid or true. It is a basic skill for a competent, free and responsible citizen.

It is not about questioning every information we get everyday, it is about being critical with the information that is relevant to us when we make up an opinion about something.

Are You Open to Feedback?

Some people avoid feedback like the plague. They think that if they don’t know their flaws, they don’t have any. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these folks make the same mistakes over and over again. Other people evade constructive feedback by surrounding themselves with yes people. They’d rather receive confirmation of their own ideas than be challenged by opposing views. While that might do wonders for their ego, it does little to advance their cause. The fact is, surrounding yourself with yes people is like talking to yourself.

Feedback should be welcomed rather than feared.

In fact, we should thank folks who make the effort to nurture us with their valuable input –– even if it hurts at times. How do you expect to become a better person if you don’t know where to begin? The truth is, practice doesn’t make perfect if you’re doing it wrong. Feedback enables us to learn about our shortcomings and take corrective action. Don’t bury your head…nourish it. That’s how excellence is born.

Three Tips for Leaving Your Classroom Island | Getting Smart | #LEARNing2LEARN #ProfessionalDevelopment | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Next Steps For Your First Step

So how can you take the first step toward scaling your own impact as a teacher? Stepping outside of your classroom can feel difficult, but it doesn’t need to be—there are many ways to find opportunities to collaborate and grow as a professional.

Seek support from your school leadership. Ask your administrators about training opportunities and collaborative experiences. Ask about how they can help you meet your professional development needs. Perhaps you can even develop your expertise on instructional strategies and provide training to other teachers.

Talk to other teachers. Join virtual collaboration groups. Embrace Twitter as a venue through which to connect to others in the educational community. Other educators can be a wealth of information. I’ve found that the more people I meet, the more opportunities I discover.

Do your research on topics that you’re passionate about. Be willing to take a chance on yourself. Personally, I’ve been humbled to find myself working alongside teachers who are amazing educators and people. Reach for the opportunities you hope to experience.

Stepping outside of your comfortable classroom to examine yourself and how you can improve is the best way to remain engaged and grow as an educator. Don’t let fear keep you from leaving your island. Network and collaborate and you’ll become a better teacher, too.

Will a large enough group of people even read this post to make a difference or will people need to print it out to share copies with others?

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Like other aspects of modern life, education can make the head hurt. So many outcomes, so much important work to do, so many solutions and strategies, so many variations on teaching, so many different kinds of students with so many different needs, so many unknowns in preparing for 21st Century life and the endless list of jobs that haven’t been invented.

What if we discovered one unifying factor that brought all of this confusion under one roof and gave us a coherent sense of how to stimulate the intellect, teach children to engage in collaborative problem solving and creative challenge, and foster social-emotional balance and stability—one factor that, if we got right, would change the equation for learning in the same way that confirming the existence of a fundamental particle informs a grand theory of the universe?

That factor exists: It’s called empathy.

Guest Post: Time Keeps on Slipping (So, use it productively)!

Paying enough effort and time is a key to success. However, sometimes the effort and time are not enough to get what you want. The matter is that we get the desired result when we properly use all the resources available. In this lies the real effectiveness that can help you to achieve what you want.

There are thousands of examples when people have several spare hours per day for accomplishing their goals but they never get what they want. And there are thousands of examples when people who have almost no free time get everything they want: they combine work and study, family and business, travel and full-time job. Why does this happen? In fact, the answer to this question lies in personal productivity and ability to manage time properly.
